Working on new build homes are projects we particularly like. Designing a new home gives you the freedom to get every detail right from the start. For this Bristol home, the architect and homeowners wanted a clean, contemporary look with strong architectural lines, high thermal performance and large areas of glazing. The brief required products that worked across multiple elevations, roof forms and opening types while maintaining consistency in colour and sightlines. At the same time they needed to be of excellent quality but affordable.

They also needed a supplier with enough technical capability to manage different systems and formats on a single build. That is where our experience with Smart Systems, Internorm and specialist glass products added real value.

A contemporary home with complex glazing requirements

The property combines a cedar-clad first floor with a smooth rendered ground floor, giving the house a warm, natural finish contrasted with crisp aluminium detailing. At the rear, a large glass extension forms the heart of the home, with three elevations wrapped in sliding doors and fixed glazing. The design relies heavily on slim profiles and uninterrupted views, and it was essential that the glazing supported the architectural intent rather than compete with it.

Across the rest of the property, the architect specified a mix of fixed, top-hung, tilt-and-turn, tall vertical glazing and corner configurations. Every elevation needed something slightly different, and each had to tie together visually.

Smart Systems Alitherm & Visoglide

We supplied and installed a complete Smart Systems aluminium solution:

Alitherm 400 flush casement windows

Used throughout the build for their clean sightlines and dependable performance. These provide a consistent look on the front and side elevations while delivering modern energy efficiency. The slim frames suit both the cedar cladding and render, giving a unified appearance across materials.

Alitherm 400 flush windows come with premium grade aluminium extruded and coated by Smarts Systems in Yatton, Bristol. These come with latest generation design, excellent security and thermal performance. Multi point locking with robust handles, safety glass where required and 28mm units, having a soft-coat low-emissivity coating, warm edge spacer bars and argon gas fill.

The nicest part of this is our ability to profide a glass Juliet Balcony using our Q-Railing System. A minimal, easy-maintenance system with no visual clutter. It complements the flush windows and keeps the external aesthetic clean from top to bottom.

Two sets of three-panel sliders form the rear extension, with a two-panel set to the main living area. Internally, the extension includes a second three-panel slider meeting neatly at the corner post, creating a further connection between the kitchen and outdoor space.
The slim profiles allow the wide open-plan rooms to retain their light and flow, even on overcast days. Visoglide Sliding doors are just a small part of our extensive sliding doors range for new build or replacing your dated patio doors.

Raked glazing and rooflights

Above the sliding doors sits a combination of raked-head windows and overhead rooflights. These lift daylight deep into the plan and align with the modern design language of the home.

Internorm entrance door & picture window

At the front of the house, the homeowners chose an Internorm aluminium entrance door with matching side panel. This sets the tone immediately: modern, secure, efficient and high-quality. Above sits a large fixed picture window with a clean cruciform profile, bringing natural light into the stairwell and giving the front elevation a strong architectural focal point.

A build with this level of variation requires more than simply fitting alitherm aluminium windows and sliding doors.

• how to sequence the work alongside the main contractor and architectural team
