When you want to create an impressive and statement-making entrance for your home, whether a new build or a significant renovation, pivot doors are outstanding. At CBP, we supply and install the prestigious RK Pivot Doors range, which are a genuine residential front door solution for contemporary homes where you want the entrance to make a statement.

We choose RK because their engineering, security credentials and build quality match the standard we expect across our product range and we believe them to be one of the best door brands in the UK today. This article explains what a pivot door is, how it differs from a standard hinged front door and what you should consider before specifying one.

What is a pivot door?

A pivot door rotates on a vertical axis using pivot hardware mounted at the top and bottom of the panel, rather than conventional side-mounted hinges fixed to the frame edge.

The pivot point is typically offset from the door edge, usually around a third of the way across. When the door opens, one side of the panel moves outward while the other moves inward.

This is not just a different way of hanging a door. It changes the load path entirely. A standard hinged door transfers its full weight through two or three hinges screwed into the side of the frame, which limits how large and heavy the panel can practically be. A pivot door transfers weight vertically through a floor-mounted pivot pin, which means the mechanism can support much wider and heavier panels without compromising smooth operation.

The result is a balanced, controlled rotation rather than a push-and-swing — and because the pivot hardware is concealed, you get clean, uninterrupted sightlines on both sides of the door. It is this combination of scale, movement and visual simplicity that makes pivot doors so effective as front entrance doors.

Why aluminium?

Aluminium is the natural material for an external pivot door. It offers the strength-to-weight ratio needed to support large, heavy door leaves without flex or distortion over time. It does not expand, contract, warp or absorb moisture the way timber can, which matters for a door exposed to the UK climate year-round.

RK Door Systems manufacture their pivot doors using premium German-engineered aluminium profiles with integrated thermal breaks — separating the inner and outer faces of the frame with an insulating barrier. This allows the door to deliver strong thermal performance without sacrificing structural integrity. RK pivot doors achieve a U-value of 0.72 W/m²K, depending on the model chosen. Front doors should meet or exceed current Building Regulations requirements.

The finish options are extensive. RK pivot doors offer a range of standard RAL powder-coated colours at no extra cost, along with wood-effect finishes, foil coatings, metallic finishes and their Elite range of hand-applied metal surfaces and ceramic faces. If you want the warmth of timber without the maintenance, or the character of bronze or corten steel on an aluminium door, RK can deliver it.

Pivot door vs hinged door: what is the difference?

Beyond the mechanism, there are practical differences worth understanding.

A standard hinged front door is typically limited to around 1.0–1.2m wide before the hardware and frame begin to struggle. That is fine for a conventional entrance, but it sets a ceiling on what you can achieve visually.

A pivot door removes that constraint. RK pivot doors can be manufactured up to 2,000mm wide and 4,000mm tall in a single panel. Standard dimensions are 1,600mm wide by 2,500mm high, with a minimum width of 1,100mm for refurbishment projects and 1,200mm for new builds. Add sidelights and fanlights within a single frame construction and you can create an entrance that a hinged door simply cannot match.

The other key difference is how the door seals. A hinged door closes into a fully rebated frame — a stepped recess that creates consistent compression all around the door. A pivot door does not close into a traditional rebate in the same way, so the sealing system relies on compression gaskets and weather strips. This means weather performance needs more careful thought, particularly in exposed locations.

This is not a reason to avoid a pivot door externally. It is a reason to think about the entrance design as a whole. Some form of recessed entrance, porch or overhang is generally recommended to protect the door from direct driving rain, especially in exposed countryside or coastal locations. With appropriate weather protection, a well-specified pivot door will perform reliably for years.

Security and certification

Security is non-negotiable for a front entrance door, and it is an area where RK pivot doors are particularly strong. Every RK pivot door comes with full PAS 24:2022 and Secured by Design enhanced security certification as standard. These are not optional upgrades — they are built into the system.

The doors use multi-point locking integrated into the door leaf and frame. RK also offer fingerprint entry systems and smart home integration for keyless access, which we can specify and install as part of your project.

What are the practical considerations?

Pivot doors are a premium product, and the pricing reflects that. The specialist hardware, tighter engineering tolerances and larger panel sizes all contribute to higher costs compared with a standard hinged entrance door.

Installation requires more precision. The floor pivot must be accurately positioned and set into the floor slab or threshold during the build phase. The structural opening needs to accommodate the door’s dual-swing arc, because the panel occupies space on both sides of the opening when it moves. Clearances need checking carefully at the design stage.

Not every opening suits a pivot door. A standard-width opening of around 900mm does not benefit from the pivot mechanism — a conventional hinged door will perform just as well and cost less. Pivot doors come into their own where the opening is wide enough to justify the engineering, typically 1,200mm and above.

Getting this right is where working with an experienced installer matters. CBP has the technical knowledge to assess your opening, advise on specification and ensure the installation is carried out correctly. The UK pivot door market is still relatively young, and not every installer has hands-on experience with these systems. We do, as shown in one of many case studies with RK Pivot Entrance Doors.

When is a pivot door the right choice?

A pivot door is worth considering when you want an entrance that goes beyond what a standard hinged door can deliver. That usually means an oversized opening, a desire for minimal sightlines, larger glazed areas and architectural scale. A front door that sets the tone for the rest of the house.

For contemporary new builds, major renovations and properties with generous entrance openings, an RK aluminium pivot door is one of the most effective ways to create an architectural entrance. The aluminium profile handles the thermal and weather performance, the flush threshold provides clean integration with floor finishes, and the sheer scale of the door creates presence that no other door type quite matches.
